Coach Mike Shanahan and the players agreed. In order to salvage this season and have a shot at the playoffs the game against the Panthers was a must win. A record of 4-5 would be good enough for second place in the NFC East, and a bye week would rest up some key players, preparing them for a terrible stretch of divisional games.
Instead of that beautiful scenario the Redskins did what Redskins do: fall in crunch time to a ho-ho-rendous team. The 1-6 Panthers are 1-6 for a reason. They simply couldn't close games away, a trait they shared with the Redskins. Alas, the Redskins were better at losing than the Panthers and failed to capitalize on drives while the defense forced no turnovers. Today was the first day the offense had a goal-to-go situation and didn't score any points, also was one of the few times the Redskins failed to convert a fourth down on the season.
The offense still, was plagued by drops, and RG3 had an uncharacteristic amount of high and inaccurate passes. Penalties also hampered them, a 10 yard holding penalty ended a strong drive for Washington and kept them from scoring a touchdown. A couple of Josh Wilson pass interference calls set up big plays and got the Panthers a touchdown.
The Redskins, like last week, just played terribly, Shanahan made some questionable play calls and team got man handled on both sides of the line while failing to get pressure on Cam Newton. If the Redskins keep this up the Rams are going to have two really high draft picks next year. A brightside? DeAngelo Hall seemed to have learned from last week, played a decent game and had good coverage and knocked away a deep touchdown pass, and for the first time kept quiet and let his football do his talking. Good stuff Hall.
I'm keeping this short because I'm sick of writing about how horrible we played last week. It's like I suffered while watching the game and am reliving the pain now. The good thing about next week? The Skins can't lose and I'll take the bye week to write an article about something else...maybe about the results of tomorrow's elections...or about candy. I like candy.
